Baltimore City Swim Club
THE BALTIMORE CITY SWIM CLUB (BCSC)
The Baltimore City Swim Club (BCSC) is entering its 30th season as a team. Founded in 1986, the team is committed to using swimming as a catalyst in promoting excellence in athletics, academics, and sportsmanship. Since 1986, in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area the Baltimore City Swim Club has been dedicated to developing the minds and bodies of youth 4 – 18 years of age.
In addition to the focus on swimming as a sport, we take pride in providing well rounded experiences and the opportunity to encourage personal growth of our members. With the assistance of The Baltimore City Swim Club staff, we have proudly advocated and helped swimmers secure acceptance into, as well as obtain swim scholarships, at both two-year community and four-year colleges and universities. Just to name a few, we have had former BCSC swimmers attend Baltimore City Community College, Catonsville Community College, Morgan State University, Coppin State University, the University of Maryland - Baltimore County, the University of Maryland - College Park, Howard University, North Carolina A & T, Catholic University, Harvard and a host of other public and private learning institutions.
Placement on the team and the training provided is tailored based on the swimming ability of the athlete. Skill assessments are conducted on a continuous basis to assure that each youngster receives the greatest benefit from the training program. To date, the team has instructed/coached over 2300 learn-to-swim and competitive athletes.
Registered in United States and Maryland Swimming, our team is currently composed of approximately 60 athletes. Each year, these athletes take part in the Learn-To-Swim program or competitive swimming during the months of September through May for short-course swimming and June through August for long-course swimming. With the upcoming season, we expect to register at least 25 new swimmers.
A great deal of hard work and discipline is exhibited by our swimmers during the four (4) day per week training in preparation for the 23 swim meets the team attends each season. Meets are attended throughout the state of Maryland as well as nationwide. Our team has attended meets in locations such as: Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, D.C., Princeton University in New Jersey, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Richmond, Virginia, Nassau County, New York, Cary, North Carolina and many other exciting locations. It is opportunities such as these that expand the horizons of our youth.
The Baltimore City Swim Club (BCSC) swimmers are predominantly from low to middle income families. The benefits of membership on the swim team reaches far beyond swimming competitively. The benefits include but are not limited to the following: (1) although multi-cultural, specifically helping African American kids learn how to swim helps improve on the national statistics that show that African American children drown at a rate nearly three times higher than their Caucasian peers – see the additional statistics listed below (2) helping to reduce the current levels of and prevent future childhood obesity (3) promoting education and providing support mechanisms – such as helping to secure swimming scholarships – for attending institutions of higher learning and (4) providing highly trained/qualified swimmers for employment opportunities and helping to staff our local/municipal Baltimore City swimming pools.
Any support/donations given to the team not only allows us to continue to operate, but to continue to offer quality instruction to a population that would otherwise not be able to afford what has been a mostly exclusive world of swimming. Continuing to keep current with the latest equipment and apparel allows us to represent ourselves well and to stay on as much of a level playing field as possible - or at least remain in the vicinity.
