Joseph Lee Playfields

6200 E. Pratt St. • Baltimore 21224

Joseph Lee Playfields in Southeast Baltimore is nestled between local Patterson High School and the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus at the northern high ground of the Herring Run watershed. Brimming with fields, surfaces and facilities to play on, the park is a proud homage to its namesake—the man regarded as the “father of the playgrounds.”

The park came about in 1949 during the Urban Big City Playground period following the death of Joseph E. Lee more than a decade earlier. Serving as president of the National Recreation Association from 1910-’37, Lee was at the forefront of America’s burgeoning rec movement. In the decades that have passed, Joseph Lee Playfields continues to carry out the tradition that inspired its creation.

The playfield boasts a number of open-grass athletic fields and several baseball/softball diamonds, in addition to its playground, fieldhouse, basketball court and wading pool.

Today the park is more of an athletic site, frequently hosting softball leagues, soccer matches, kickball tournaments and other outdoors recreation events.
